A collage of different styles of roll neck

Roll necks have moved well beyond a cold-weather staple. This season, both chunky cables and fine knit styles are appearing across runway looks, street style and everyday wardrobes, making them one of the most versatile pieces in a winter wardrobe.

Chunky Roll Necks

Chunky Roll Necks are made to create instant fireside cosiness. Wrap yourself in neutral-toned cables that feel both luxurious and effortless. The contrast of stitches adds beautiful texture and depth, giving you room to play. Oversized silhouettes look especially striking here. This is where warmth meets personality.

Fine Roll Necks

From our perspective, finer roll necks are becoming the layering piece we reach for most, a clean, refined base that works under almost everything.

Our Merino Roll Necks

New to our collection this year, both styles are knitted from 100% Australian Merino sourced through Endeavour Wool Exports at Eulong Farm, just outside Hamilton near Halls Gap in Victoria. The wool is graded at 15 to 17 microns, placing it in the ultrafine category. To put that in perspective, carpet-grade wool sits at the top of the 40-micron scale. Once you wear it, you will understand why we keep coming back to this yarn. Read more about what makes Australian Merino different.

Merino Cable Roll Neck

The Merino Cable Roll Neck is knitted in a textured cable pattern with rib detailing on the sleeves. Side splits allow for movement, while the 1x1 ribbed cuffs, collar and hem create a polished finish. Available in Camel, a timeless neutral for the cooler months.

The Merino Fine Roll Neck is lightweight and refined, featuring set-in sleeves and ribbed details at the collar, cuffs and hem. Available in Black and Ivory, it is the perfect layering piece for effortless winter dressing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are roll necks still in fashion?

Yes. Roll necks have become a wardrobe staple rather than a trend, appearing in both chunky and fine knit forms across everyday and dressed-up looks. Their versatility, particularly as a layering piece, keeps them relevant season after season.

What is the difference between a roll neck and a turtleneck?

The terms are often used interchangeably, but a roll neck typically has a looser, folded collar that sits softly, while a turtleneck tends to be tighter and more structured. We prefer to call a turtleneck a 'mock neck'.

Is Merino wool good for roll necks?

It is one of the best fibres for the style. Merino is soft enough to wear directly against the neck without irritation, and its natural thermoregulation means it keeps you warm without overheating. Our roll necks are knitted from ultrafine 15 to 17 micron Merino, which is noticeably softer than most wool you would find on the high street. You can read more about our Merino wool in our blog post: Why Choose Australian Merino?

How do I style a fine roll neck?

A fine roll neck works best as a layering base. Wear it under a blazer, cardigan or coat, or pair it with another knit for a tonal winter look. Our Merino Fine Roll Neck in Black or Ivory pairs particularly well with the Fine Cardigan.

How do I care for a Merino roll neck?

Merino is best washed on a gentle or wool cycle in cold water. Lay flat to dry rather than hanging, which can distort the shape. Avoid the dryer. With the right care, a quality Merino knit will last for many seasons.
